Eighteen-year-old Kim Hartlinger needs as much help as the people she has come to minister to. Kim’s idea of a mission trip is staying at a hotel with a shopping mall close by. Last minute changes to the groups’ itinerary send them to an area so remote only a GPS unit can get them there.
Debut authors Roger Bruner and Kristi Rae Bruner create a character you want to hate but just can’t. Kim is not one-dimensional, but exhibits many qualities common to real people. She can be selfish, thinking only of her own wants, and the next minute, she is concerned with reaching people for Christ. Kim is spoiled, but her desire to tell others about Christ is genuine. And like many of us, she has no idea what a mission trip really entails—no idea how much of the world lives.
Through the course of the story Kim comes to care for the people they have come to help. God’s dream for the people of Santa Maria also becomes her dream for them, as she learns to follow God’s leading.
