Lisa Wingate has a delightful voice and in the Daily, Texas series, of which Never Say Never is the third, that voice sings.
You owe yourself the treat of reading this book.
I have to admit this series sat on my shelf for a while. The series intrigued me because of the phenomenal covers that invited me to see what fun and mischief the heroines were getting into—but the books were set in Texas. I like Texas—really—but it always take a kick from a bull to get me to actually read the books. Once I picked up the first book, I raced through the series in a week.
Never Say Never stands on its own in the series. If you’ve read the earlier books, you’ll enjoy chatting with old friends like Donetta Bradford. I adore Donetta and her sidekicks, Imagene and Lucy. This time the trio is off to enjoy a cruise that’s aborted by a hurricane.
They join the rush west, but get caught up in the storm that is Kai Miller. Kai has spent her life floating around, but has made something of a life for herself along the Texas coast. Now the hurricane has chased her to Daily where she collides with Kemp Rollins, a baseball player who’s coaching the local high school team. He still has big dreams, even though one more injury could destroy his pitching arm.
Daily takes in a crowd of stranded hurricane evacuees and the usual trouble erupts. Kai’s anxious to get home, but finds herself drawn to the town. Could she finally have a home?
The book is told through the eyes of Kai and Donetta. Donetta’s chapters are filled with delightful Texan phrases. She and her friends are larger than life in the way they live and the way they give. As a lifetime outsider, Kai’s chapters are a strong contrast. The setting is so richly drawn, you’ll feel you’re living in Daily, a close-to-nothing town doing its best to stay alive in troubled times.
You owe yourself the treat of reading this book. But be warned—if you read it, you’ll be back for more!
