When her father dies and the boy she loves, Sol Reihl, leaves her and their Amish community, Carrie Weaver must make decisions that will affect her future as well as that of her younger brother Andy who is a hemophiliac. Faced with uncertainties and fear for Andy’s well being with their stepmother, she marries Daniel Miller when he promises to take care of her and Andy, too.

Fisher’s writing style is gentle yet laced with conflict and the frailties of the human soul.

Though a marriage without love is not what Carrie planned, she takes on the responsibilities of making a home for Daniel and comes to admire him and his gentle ways.

When Sol returns, her heart is torn between the boy she once loved and the man she married. Then Daniel’s prodigal brother is released from prison and returns to the Amish community. As Carrie struggles with her feelings, she learns that love and forgiveness must go hand in hand to experience happiness and contentment. How Carrie deals with the decisions she must make in The Choice captures your heart and keeps you reading.

By showing the reader the most vulnerable spots in her character’s lives, Suzanne Woods Fisher gains your sympathy and support. As a reader, I wanted Carrie to be happy.

As more of Daniel’s quiet strength and faith is revealed, the reader is drawn to him even as Carrie is.

Fisher’s characters have flaws and face decisions that reveal the depth of their faith in God. Her writing style is gentle yet laced with conflict and the frailties of the human soul. Mix in a bit of humor and depth of character as well as harsh reality, and you have a novel worthy of the Carol Award.
