In this sequel to Deliver Us From Evil, Robin Caroll moves us from the Great Smoky Mountains deep into the Louisiana bayous. While the setting isn’t critical, it provides a softly mysterious background to an incredibly intricate plot, one that easily stands alone even if you haven’t read the first book.
Caroll welds the story together with a depth and cohesiveness that is masterful.
Lincoln Vailes has taken a police officer position in his Louisiana hometown because of his father’s fight with Alzheimer’s. Responding to a domestic violence call, he meets Jade Laurent, a social worker, who has thrown herself into her work in an effort to heal wounds from her abusive past.
Jade and Lincoln are strong, likable characters, and Caroll makes you feel as if you’re right there with them. She packs a lot of emotional punch into their situation with the aftermath of a hurricane, a double homicide, the return of a brother who’s been missing for a couple of decades, car crashes, flash bombs, and gang warfare—all of which center on or connect to Jade. Definitely action-packed, Caroll welds the story together with a depth and cohesiveness that is masterful when you consider the multiple elements and the sheer number of events included.
One part of the story that I loved and hated at the same time is the battle Lincoln has with losing his faith. Initially, it was difficult to reconcile his rock-solid Christian persona from book one with this guy who is really questioning his beliefs. But it drew me along because it’s so real, so relatable to my own questions and doubts. This theme of trust and faith ties into every aspect of the story and is well done. I’m definitely anticipating In the Shadow of Evil, the third book of the trilogy, which centers on Lincoln’s partner, Maddox Bishop.
